snu COLLEGE OF EDUCATION courtyard
Location: Seoul National University, Seoul, Korea
Area 2400m²
The former central courtyard of the College of Education at Seoul National University had long been neglected, overgrown with weeds and plagued by drainage issues, making it an uninviting, abandoned space that students avoided for years.
The newly renovated courtyard has been transformed into a welcoming, multipurpose area that invites students inside, offering ample space for relaxation and small-scale events. The garden zone, created with small dogwood trees and ground covers, provides a comfortable setting for rest and chatting. In the open area, zelkova trees offer shade, and the lounge deck allows students to freely use the space for informal gatherings or small events.
The perimeter of the courtyard has been newly paved with permeable blocks, and a circular drainage system was installed to resolve the previous drainage issues in the sunken courtyard. Freely arranged table sets have been planned so users can move according to the direction of sunlight, maximizing the flexibility and utility of the space.
